The emergency department at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital has come under the management of a new private practice, Prime Medical Casualty Group. The practice has implemented new systems and staff training, much to the benefit of the local community.
According to Dr Bongani Nghondzweni, an emergency department clinician and partner in the new emergency practice at the hospital, the practice took over in early October and has seen significant results in its first month.
“We have made some decisive changes in this busy emergency department, such as ensuring that we always have two doctors on duty. Previously there was only one and this was causing considerable delays for patients.
“We take a biopsychosocial approach to engaging with each and every patient, meaning that we are mindful not only of their physical healthcare needs but also of their emotional wellbeing here in the emergency setting, which can often be a very stressful time for a patient and their loved ones,” he notes.

“We have also implemented a digital patient management system, which helps to minimise human error and streamline processes with electronic record keeping. We furthermore have the capability to conduct virtual follow-up appointments – including consultations and digital sick notes, referrals and scripts, where needed – providing our patients with greater convenience.
Dr Nghondwenzi and his practice partners, Dr Sihle Asiedu-Darkwah and Floyd Moleshiwa, work in a team of six dedicated medical practitioners alongside a locum doctor who stands in when required, ensuring that the emergency healthcare needs of the Pretoria East community are met timeously and with compassion.
“We fully embrace the Netcare approach to person centred care, which aligns closely with our own ethos of always putting the patient first. We have therefore invested in training for all staff members, including those in administrative roles, to enhance clinical and interpersonal knowledge and skills.

Mande Toubkin, general manager emergency, trauma and transplant at Netcare, thanked Dr Gary Joubert, owner of private practice Facem, for managing the emergency department at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital in the previous years.
“We wish them the very best in their future endeavours and we look forward to seeing Netcare Pretoria East Hospital’s emergency department continue its growth trajectory under the aegis of Dr Nghondwenzi and his practice partners, Dr Asiedu-Darkwah and Mr Moleshiwa,” she said.
Pieter Louw, general manager of Netcare Pretoria East Hospital, concluded by congratulating the new practice on an encouraging first month. “As a Level 3 accredited trauma centre and a busy hospital, it is of the utmost importance to us that our patients have access to the best and safest care.
“We thank the people of Pretoria East and surrounds for their ongoing support. Prime Medical Casualty Group has ushered in a new era for our facility’s emergency department and we look forward to seeing them grow from strength to strength, as together we serve our community,” he concluded.
