Netcare Milpark Hospital offers a Level 1 trauma centre to cater for all medical emergencies. Interestingly, while most private hospitals average 50 ICU and High Care beds, Milpark has 90 ICU and High Care beds. The hospital offers all medical disciplines except for Maternity and Paediatrics.

Unique facilities:
Bone and Joint Reconstruction Unit – this unit offers reconstructive expertise to patients who require super specialized care. It is run by five Orthopaedic Surgeons. For more information contact the unit on: 011 482 212

Burns unit – the hospital has a state of the art dedicated burns unit.

Cardiology – the hospital offers a full range of services and facilities including: Electrophysiology lab, Cardiac Catheterization lab, Cardiothoracic surgery, Transplants, Pacemaker Clinic and Chest Pain Clinic.

Hyperbaric Medicine – the hospital has a hyperbaric chamber which is used to treat a number of conditions including: decompression sickness, radiation necrosis and problematic wounds. For more information contact the centre on: 011 480 5660

Sleep Laboratory – offers services for evaluation and treating sleep disorders is offered by medical professionals in a state of the art facility.

Since its inception in 1979, the Milpark Hospital Cardiology and
Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Unit have led the advancement of cardiology and cardio-thoracic surgery in South Africa, achieving several medical milestones in the process.


  • 1979 First open-heart surgery.
  • 1980 Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory opened
  • 1982 First intra-coronary thrombolysis performed.
  • 1984 First PTCA in Milpark Hospital Cardiac Catherisation Laboratory
  • 1984 First bilateral internal mammory artery bypass grafting.
  • 1986 First private patient undergoes coronary angioplasty at Milpark Hospital Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory
  • 1989 First directional coronary atherectomy.
  • 1991 Coronary stenting pioneered in South Africa.
  • 1991 First radio frequency ablation in South Africa
  • 1992 First thoracoscopy.
  • 1993 First private heart transplant in Gauteng
  • 1995 Intra-coronary ultrasound instituted for the first time
  • 1995 First private heart\lung transplant
  • 1997 Coronary rotoblator performed for the first time.
  • 1997 First lung reduction.
  • 1998 Youngest heart transplant (11 years old)
  • 1998 First bi-ventricular pacing in Electrophysiology laboratory
  • 2000 First successful single lung transplant
  • 2001 Tandem heart (PTVA system ) used successfully to support patient to definitive angioplastic treatment
  • 2001 Tandem heart (PTVA system) used successfully in theatre for high risk CABG
    procedure and permanent pacemaker insertion
  • 2002 Cardiac Catheterisation laboratory chosen to participate in a worldwide trial in
    drug eluting stents
  • 2002 First Amplatzer device implant to correct a ruptured congenital Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm in South Africa
  • 2002 First successful bilateral sequential lung transplant
  • 2008 Dedicated Private Burns Centre in South Africa
  • 2008 First live broadcast of Cardiac Surgery on National television
