Hyperbaric Medicine
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
  • Hyperbaric therapy is a treatment administered by delivering 100% oxygen at an increased ambient pressure (i.e. increased atmospheric pressure) for its medicinal effects.
  • It is proven to be an effective treatment of choice in some indications and an adjunctive treatment for others.

Indications for Treatment

  • Air or Gas Embolism
  • Decompression Sickness
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
  • Cyanide Poisoning
  • Compartment Syndrome
  • Compromised Skin Grafts
  • Exceptional Anaemia
  • Gas Gangrene
  • Intercranial Abscess
  • Necrotizing Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Radiation Necrosis
  • Thermal Burns
  • Problem Wounds

A copy of hyperbaric studies and support is available from our unit on request

The unit is directed by Dr M Botha (MBChB) and treatment is provided for patients with a wide variety of conditions including decompression illness, radiation necrosis, problematic wounds and other internationally recognized indications supported by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. (UHMS)

For almost two years now, Netcare Milpark Hyperbaric Medicine Centre has been treating patients both within the hospital and around Gauteng with predominantly successful results. In fact, the demand for this service has increased so dramatically that our plans to expand the unit have been implemented sooner, rather than the time envisaged, which was three years since opening.

Netcare Milpark Hyperbaric Medicine Centre is proud to announce the arrival of a second hyperbaric chamber to the unit. The arrival of this chamber allows us to undertake a greater workload to reduce the waiting period for patients that need hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

For more information on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, please contact us. Feel free to “pop-in” and see our unit at any time during office hours to learn more about the service we offer.

Netcare Milpark Bone & Joint Reconstruction Unit (NMBJRU)
The aim of NMBJRU is to provide reconstruction expertise to orthopaedic patients requiring super specialised management and treatment options that go beyond what they are currently being offered by their own Orthopaedic Surgeons and Doctors.

In a sense, these are the patients that have been told that nothing further can be done for them. They a not treatable in their current environment and require a super-specialised environment. The types of cases that are referred to the MBJRU are those that cannot be managed by a single Orthopaedic Surgeon.

The uniqueness of the MBJRU lies in the organised co-operation of Five Orthopaedic Surgeons who in their respective practices have built a level of niche expertise that has earned them respective credibility within the realm of orthopaedic surgery both nationally and internationally.

They are joined by a group of other specialists to establish a range of services that currently don’t exist.

This co-operation has created a pool of super-specialised knowledge resulting in a whole new treatment mechanism that goes way beyond what is the norm in Orthopaedic Surgery today.

NMBJRU consists of primary super-specialists expertise, namely

  • Dr Charles Launtenbach
  • Dr Jakob Retter
  • Dr Gert Swartz
  • Dr Hendrik Pieterse
  • Dr Stelios Hadjichristofis

Procedures performed in NMBJRU

  • Joint reconstruction - replacement, revision replacement, realignment, remobilization, infection control and stabilization.
  • Bone Reconstruction – realignment, lengthening, infection control of tumour treatment, non-union treatment, mal-union management, congenital abnormalities.
  • Soft tissue reconstruction, soft tissue cover, functional

”In 1945, the average chance of survival from severe burns was less than 25%. In the early 70s, it was discovered that early removal of burned, dead tissue boosted the patients' chances of survival. Today, even patients with the most devastating burns - those covering more than 70 percent of their skin surface - have an outstanding chance of survival.“

Dedicated Burns Centre
The Netcare Milpark Trauma Centre has over 15 years experience in the handling of major burns. The new Netcare Milpark Burns Centre is the only dedicated private Burns Centre in South Africa and as part of the Netcare Milpark Trauma Centre is the largest private trauma complex in the world outside of the USA.

The eight bed Burns Centre has been designed to reduce the potential infection rate of burns patients by means of Intensive Care Isolation Cubicles and a dedicated Burns Theatre in the Centre.

The most modern technical equipment was sourced to support the multidisciplinary group of medical professionals. In this team approach, Trauma & Critical Care Specialists work closely with Plastic Surgeons to ensure both quality and quantity of care. Besides core medical staff, the multidisciplinary group also includes the following:

  • Physicians
  • Nephrologists
  • Specialized nursing staff
  • Special teams in the operating room
  • Trauma Counseling Team
  • Special wound & dressing nursing staff
  • Renal Dialysis Services
  • Physiotherapists
  • Hyperbaric Medicine Centre
  • Dietician

Burns are a daily occurrence in Southern Africa. The severity is very often dependent on the type of burn and how fast it has been treated correctly. The types of burns seen at Netcare Milpark include chemical, explosion, petrol, veldt fires, buildings or shack fires, aircraft, water and electrical.

Burn injuries are classified according to the extent or size of the area affected the depth of the burn and whether internal organs, such as lungs are involved. Incidentally around a quarter of burn injuries admitted to the Netcare Milpark Trauma Centre include other trauma injuries such as broken limbs or head injuries.

As part of our commitment to the private healthcare sector the new Dedicated Burns Centre will accept any private, medical aid and privately insured patients regardless of the severity of their burn injuries, and care for them from acute injury to a complete rehabilitation.

Hospital Information

Useful Admission Information

A hospital stay is never something we wish for ourselves or loved ones. To assist you in the preparation for your stay and to ensure that your treatment is carried our efficiently, we have listed some important facts & requirements.

Pre-Admission Procedures
Once your doctor has informed you that you will be admitted to Netcare Milpark Hospital, please report to our pre-admission office, which is open from 07:00-16:00, Monday to Friday. Please be sure to bring your identity document and medical aid scheme membership card with you. The objective of the pre-admission process is to guide patients through the hospital booking procedure.

Cash paying patients will be informed of deposits required, and will be referred to the finance department, should further clarity be needed.

All medical aid schemes in South Africa require their members to obtain

On-line Pre-Admissions
Internet use in South Africa has grown phenomenally. In line with this, Netcare launched a countrywide on-line pre-admission service to facilitate easy admission on the day of your procedure. In addition, on-line pre-admission greatly enhances the efficiency of the admission process and, ultimately, the entire service offering to patients.

The system has several added benefits including:

  • Giving patients an automated reminder to bring with them their signed consent form on the day of admission
  • Allowing for the completion of the on-line medical history, saving valuable nursing time on day of admission
  • Reminding patients to bring their chronic medication with them
  • Providing a link to the online patient information leaflets supporting the informed consent process.

Medication
Chronic medication is usually continued in hospital, but not all the medical schemes supply chronic medication at preferential rates during your stay as an inpatient, we therefore request that you bring your chronic medication with you. If you have been prescribed medication for your current condition and have not finished said medication or are on any over the counter or homeopathic medication, please bring this with you. It is important to bring the medication in their original packaging and not in daily dispensers or unlabelled containers. Upon admission please hand your chronic medication or other medications to the Nursing staff in the ward. Please note that all medication must be written up / prescribed by your attending doctor.

Nightwear, dressing gown and slippers
Please bring nightwear and something to wear over your night wear when walking in the wards or for going to tests & x-rays. Please note that there are no laundry facilities at the hospital. For your own safety we request that that you wear non slip shoes, with rubber soles at all times, please do not bring socks to walk in as they may cause you to fall.

Toiletries
Your personal toiletries should be brought with you. For your convenience there is a retail pharmacy in the Hospital’s reception area. Please include a lip balm and a body cream or lotion if you are to be at bed rest.

Something to pass the time
Each bed in the general wards has a Television. Newspapers are available at the NetCafè in reception and a mobile tuck shop also visits the wards each day.

Authorisation Numbers
We would like to remind you of the importance of obtaining a hospitalisation authorisation number from your medical aid / insurer prior to your admission. Authorisation must be obtained from your scheme by the scheme member and failure to do so could result in delays in admission or even penalties being imposed by your scheme, please refer to your scheme rules for more information.

Private Patient Accounts
Unfortunately, patients belonging to medical schemes not contracted to the Netcare Group of Hospitals or who does not have a medical scheme will be requested to make a deposit equal to the estimated cost associated with the procedure for which he/she is being admitted. As this deposit is an estimate only, note that upon presentation of your final account you may receive a refund or be requested to settle any outstanding monies. Please note that other auxiliary service providers including but not limited to Doctors, X-Rays and Laboratories are not included in your hospital bill and must be settled separately.

Hospital Charges
It is important to note that ward fees are charged in 12 hour increments from midnight to noon and from noon to midnight. Your hospital account will therefore reflect wards charges in accordance with your time of admission and discharge.

Private / Semi-private ward fees
Most medical schemes do not cover hospitalisation in a private or semi-private ward unless the patient’s medical condition requires one. If you would prefer to stay in a private or semi-private room please enquire from reception regarding the availability as well as the cost which will be for your own account.

Meals & Special Dietary requirements
The hospital will provide meals in accordance with your special dietary requirements and the doctors’ work in close association with our on-site dietician. You may also request a complementary consultation with our on-site dietician.

With regards to Halaal & Kosher meals, these are outsourced and specially ordered in. When ordering your meals from the ward hostess please request to order form the Halaal or Kosher menu.

Please note should your meal be late or you arrived in the hospital after mealtimes, do not hesitate to notify your ward hostess who will gladly assist in requesting a sandwich from the kitchen.

Pillows
Whilst these are supplied, some patients wish to bring a special pillow with them, to avoid confusion with the hospital linen, please refrain from using a white pillowcase.

What not to bring
Valuables
You will need your Identity Document, or Passport and Medical Aid card for the admission process, but if at all possible please send it home once you have been admitted. Bring only a small amount of cash for your daily newspaper or tuck shop visits and leave all other valuables at home.

Should you wish to bring any electrical appliances, please request the ward secretary to have these appliances inspected by the Hospital’s technical team to declare them safe for use in the wards.

We strongly advise you NOT to bring cell phones, I-pods, laptops or other valuable items to the hospital, as we cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage. Our security officers will gladly assist in the locking away and safe keeping of valuables that you are not able to send home.

We trust that your stay at Netcare Milpark Hospital will be a pleasant one, please do not hesitate to ask the Unit Manager, Marketing Department or ward secretary for further assistance or information.
