Neuro-surgery The Neuro-Medical Unit at Netcare Rosebank Hospital was established in 2007 to meet the growing needs of patients who required intensive, short term rehabilitation.
The unit meets the needs of acute phase management of neuro-medical conditions. The central theme is on early intervention and short stay rehabilitation. We focus on early discharge, with an average length stay of between 4 to 8 weeks and continued out-patient treatment.
While patients are at our facility, they will be under the care of two neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, speech therapists, psychologists and dieticians. The unit has a dedicated therapy gym and highly specialised care workers who are trained in assisting patients with feeding, washing and dressing.
Focus is on personal attention and care. Patients receive warm and personalised attention to ensure their optimal rehabilitation.
Contributing to this warm care is a unique member of staff who frequents the unit – Banjo, a therapy dog, visits patients in the unit twice a week. Dressed in his red uniform bib, Banjo makes everyone in the ward smile. It has been scientifically proven that therapy dogs have unique benefits towards aiding the rehabilitation of patients. Animals bring calming benefits and have a positive effect on the patients’ mood and can give patients the motivation to push themselves through the rehabilitation process. This is an exciting new addition to the rehabilitation team and Netcare Rosebank Hospital is one of the few units which offers this unique service.
Rehabilitation by the unit does not stop at discharge from the hospital. A full at-home assessment is performed and care worker training is provided, to prepare patients and family for a smooth transition from the hospital to the home environment. The Neuro-Medical Unit can supply equipment as well as mobility aids to out-patients.
The Neuro-Medical Unit is recognised by all major medical aids.
