The Cardiothoracic Unit at Netcare Union Hospital comprises of a 10 Bed Dedicated Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, two Catherisation Laboratories as well as a cardiac surgery department with a dedicated cardiac theatre. The Unit offers the full spectrum of interventional cardiology, performed under the guidance of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, including:
- Coronary Angioplasty,
- Coronary Stenting,
- 3D Echocardiography,
- Rotational Arthectomy; and
- Intra-vascular Ultrasound
- Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Implantation (TAVI)
Hybrid Vascular Operating Theatre (Hybrid Cath Lab)
Traditionally, catheterization procedures such as the implantation of a pacemaker, angioplasty or stenting would be done in one lab, while open-heart operations like a coronary bypass, aortic dissection surgery or valve replacement would be performed in a separate surgical theatre. For heart patients in critical conditions, the time to be transferred from lab to a surgical theatre is time that can negatively impact the outcome because every second counts. The rationale for the Hybrid Cath Lab at Netcare Union Hospital is to overcome the limitations posed by separate theatres.
The Hybrid Cath Lab/Theatre at Netcare Union Hospital is fitted with cutting edge technology which allows our cardio and vascular surgeons to perform a diverse range of procedures. The Hybrid theatre combines space, sterility, versatility and lighting of a conventional operating theatre with fixed, high resolution imaging equipment. It is designed to meet the challenges of complex endovascular procedures, allows for simultaneous surgical and radiological interventions and is better equipped than conventional facilities to meet the challenges posed by future developments in this field. The minimally invasive surgeries, coupled with the Hybrid Cath Lab, may reduce the recovery time of certain procedures to two days as opposed to one week.
Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery
Our Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeons perform routine ENT medicine and surgery in all areas of the discipline. In addition, we are also able to offer patients state-of-the-art laser surgery.

The unit offers treatment ranging from conservative ‘bed rest’ traction through to spinal fusion as well as conventional and prosthetic disc replacement surgery. Our team of highly respected neuro-specialists specialize in both paediatric and adult patients.

Our team of world class Vascular Surgeons are able to perform a very diverse range of endovascular procedures. Netcare Union Hospital is equipped with a Hybrid Cath Lab fitted with cutting edge technology, Artis Zeego, a highly flexible robot. This robot is one of the most advanced interventional imaging systems currently on the market, which allows for easy access to all parts of the patient’s body. Supported by this technology, our Vascular Surgeons are able to offer a new, less invasive, way of treatment which shortens the patient’s hospital stay and reduces the risks of complications.
