Specialised Units

The Haemopoitic Stem Cell Transplant Unit
The Haemopoitic Stem Cell Transplant Unit at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital is the largest centre of its kind in Africa. The facility has 30 single private rooms, all in an isolation ward, which is vital to the protection of transplant patients whose immune systems are weak after transplantation. The unit is supported by a stem cell laboratory and cryopreservation facility. It has state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to rival those found anywhere else in the world.

According to Dr J Thomson, Haemotologist based at Netcare Pretoria East Hospital haemopoitic stem cell transplantation is often used as therapy to eliminate blood diseases that infiltrate the bone marrow such as leukaemia or to correct congenital immunodeficiency disorders. The unit therefore mostly treats blood disorders, lymph cancers and also metabolic disorders. Other conditions treated include sickle-cell disease, myelodysplastic syndrome, Ewing’s Sarcoma, Hodgkin’s disease and others.

Neuro Executive Suites
Netcare Pretoria East Hospital recently added 4 executive suites. The suite comprises its own bathroom and kitchenette, a small court yard and sleeper couch which makes it possible for a family member to stay overnight. Patients undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation or neuro-spinal related illness are admitted in these rooms which provide additional comfort for the patients and their loved ones.

Gastroenterology Unit
The Gastroenterology unit is an ultra-modern facility which is a world class unit offering state-of -the-art technology, enabling it to execute the advances made in therapeutic endoscopy, such as minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal ailments.

The complex technology offered at this specialised unit allow specialists to perform cutting-edge procedures on patients with a range of diverse gastrointestinal problems. The specialists using these technologies have extensive training and experience in these procedures, facilitating maximum benefit and the highest quality of care to all patients visiting the unit.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of 100% oxygen, breathed under increased environmental pressure and delivered to the tissues by means of blood circulation. Arterial blood oxygen levels 1 200% higher than normal are routinely achieved through hyperbaric oxygen treatment, inducing physiological effects only available at these oxygen doses thus affording the body the opportunity to combat infection, heal problem wounds, and survive certain life-threatening conditions. The hyperbaric oxygen therapy service is an invaluable adjunct to a multi-disciplinary treatment plan in cases of:

  • acute crush injuries
  • carbon monoxide poisoning
  • late complications of radiation therapy for cancer
  • decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism
  • diabetic wounds
  • failing grafts and flaps
  • necrotising infections and gangrene; and
  • refractory osteomyelitis.

Fetal Assessment Centre
The Fetal Assessment Centre was established as the need for fetal assessments became more prominent in South Africa. Gynaecologists who discover suspected fetal abnormalities on ultrasound will refer the pregnant patient for further fetal testing. The centre tests for a very wide range of fetal abnormalities. This centre is the oldest in Gauteng and this was the first unit that achieved HPCSA accreditation as a training facility according to Dr Hennie Lombaard who joined this unit in 1997.
