geriatrics
The psycho-geriatric programme is a specialised programme designed to assist geriatric patients suffering from disorders of old age, with a focus on cognitive impairments like memory loss or dementia.
The psycho-geriatric programme is designed for patients over the age of 65 (geriatric patients) who are experiencing disorders of old age or cognitive impairment such as memory loss or dementia.
There are dedicated psycho-geriatric wards at certain Netcare Akeso facilities. Patients are treated by a team of specialist psychiatrists and healthcare professionals with extensive experience in, and understanding of, the complexities of geriatric psychiatry and neuropsychiatry, and they are appropriately cared for by registered nurses.
Geriatric patients are also treated by specially trained psychologists and occupational therapists, with the aim of providing them with the skills to help them cope in everyday life despite their impairments. Through group therapy, patients are also given the opportunity to socialise with peers, thereby reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.
In keeping with the Netcare Akeso philosophy of holistic and integrated treatment, patients in this programme will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team including:
Generalpractitioners
Occupational therapists
Nursing staff
Psychologists
Specialistpsychiatrists
