The intentions that moved us to establish sexual assault facilities:

  • To be involved – within our scope of expertise – in addressing societal issues affecting South Africans.

  • To provide holistic care by multidisciplinary teams to all acute sexual assault survivors.

  • To work closely with the SAPS by assisting with the forensic examination, evidence preservation and solid support for survivors while encouraging them to report the incident to the SAPS and press charges.

  • To facilitate ongoing holistic support for a period of a year to survivors by appropriate NGOs.

  • To protect the identity of the survivors and maintain confidentiality of patient information.

  • To help relieve the burden on public sector resources.

  • To ensure that any sexually assaulted person seeking care at a Netcare emergency department receives appropriate and compassionate care and treatment and is treated with dignity and respect.

  • To refer victims of chronic assault to relevant specialised facilities for ongoing treatment and counselling.

  • To help people affected by sexual assault leave the Netcare facility as survivors.

  • To ensure continuity of treatment when survivors need further management.

  • To protect the rights of children 18 years and younger, as set out in the Children's Act of 2005 2012.

  • To use the skills and expertise resident in Netcare to support survivors of sexual assault medically and emotionally, demonstrating Netcare’s support for the communities in the vicinity of our hospitals.
