A dire need for organ transplants

Each year approximately 400 South Africans receive an organ transplant.

Organ donation and transplantation activity in South Africa is alarmingly low. It has deteriorated over the last five years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has not recovered since. Sadly, every year many patients die before suitable organs can be found to give them a new life.

Clinical governance

The Netcare Transplant Division is committed to transparent and accountable clinical governance. This requires us to support the transplant teams and provide person centred, safe, high quality care and the best possible patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner.

Netcare’s clinical governance structure works to uphold legal and ethical compliance within all frameworks that govern transplants. We align to international standards guided by South African legislation, Netcare policies and standard operating procedures, and by guidelines issued by the South African Transplant Society.

Why not become an organ donor?

The Netcare Transplant Division supports the Organ Donor Foundation. Becoming a donor is easy – all you need to do is register on the Organ Donor Foundation’s website, www.odf.org.za or call them on 0800 226 611.

Organ transplants are one of the most miraculous achievements of modern medicine. However, organ transplants depend on the generosity of organ donors and their families who are willing to give the gift of life to others.

Anyone who has died or been declared brainstem dead and whose next of kin have consented to organ donation, can be a donor and give another person the opportunity of a new life. Be sure that your loved ones are aware that you have registered as an organ donor and that it is your wish to donate your organs and/or tissue.
