“The opening of the Medicross Eye Centre in January this year brings the number of Medicross facilities in Kimberley to no fewer than three. These include Medicross Kimberley Medical and Dental Centre, Medicross Kimberley Narko Day Hospital and our newest facility, the Medicross Eye Care Centre,” says Salome Liebenberg, general manager: operations at Medicross.
According to Liebenberg, the relationship between Medicross and the people of Kimberley is a long one that has steadily grown over the past 24 years since Medicross first opened a medical and dental centre in the largest city in the Northern Cape.
“Having been in operation for well over two decades, Medicross Kimberley is a well-established medical and dental centre, and has earned a reputation as a well-managed facility offering a range of quality primary healthcare services to the people of the city and region. We are delighted that we have been able to expand our medical services in Kimberley over the years to also include eye care services and surgical procedures in our day hospital to the people of the communities we serve.
“There have been a few new developments at Medicross Kimberley in recent months, with Dr Garth Cornelissen having joined fellow general practitioners Dr Lynn Hartzenburg, Dr Shabana-Nahid Kauchali-Taleb and Dr Jacques Pretorius as from April 2019. Dr Cornelissen adds to the wealth of medical experience at Medicross Kimberley.
In addition to general medical services, the services offered by Medicross Kimberley have grown considerably and now include lung function screening, electrocardiography (ECG), women’s health and PAP smears, a baby wellness clinic, wound care, insurance medicals, weight loss programmes, diabetic screening and management, men’s health, circumcision, HIV and tuberculosis management amongst others. There is also a Clicks pharmacy on site.
A team of seven dentists, including Dr Lusette Fourie, Dr Victorien Kammer, Dr Jurie Kemp, Dr Mariza Meyer, Dr Peter Middleton, Dr Paola Vermeer and Dr Coert Vorster, provides a full suite of dental services. This includes general and cosmetic dentistry, oral hygiene, crowns, veneers and bridges, dentures, teeth whitening, orthodontic treatment, implants, and root canal treatments.
“The provision of quality care, convenience and accessibility for individuals and families to receive medical, dental, and a range of allied healthcare services all under a single roof, has long been the recipe behind the success of Medicross,” notes Liebenberg.
“A few years ago, we identified a need for a day hospital service to serve the greater Kimberley community. It was therefore a logical step for us to augment our service offering by making day procedures as well as specialised eye care available to our patients. The fact that there has been such a great demand for the services offered by the facility has confirmed this view.”
“The day hospital concept is becoming increasingly popular not only in South Africa but around the world, with patients particularly appreciating the cost effectiveness, convenience and other benefits of same-day surgery in a day hospital. We have seen the same trend within the Kimberley region and are delighted that this modern facility is benefitting our patients in the Northern Cape,” says Liebenberg.
The state-of-the-art Medicross Kimberley Narko Clinic Day Hospital has two theatres, a two-bed endoscopic unit and a licence for 18 beds. A number of interventional specialists and surgeons perform a comprehensive range of basic and more complex surgeries at the facility.
These include general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, dental surgery, maxillo-facial surgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery, gynaecological surgery, urological surgery, ophthalmic (eye) surgery, orthopaedic surgery as well as colonoscopies. These are done either under local or regional anaesthesia or, where appropriate, under general anaesthesia.
The Medicross Eye Care Centre, which is situated within the Medicross Kimberley Narko Day Hospital, is run by the well-known ophthalmologist, Dr Obie Jackson. Dr Jackson settled in the Diamond City some 22 years ago after a number of adventures which took him to Cape Town and later abroad. The Kimberley-based ophthalmologist, Dr Kenneth Hornby, is also performing surgery on a part-time basis at the day hospital.
We are grateful that Medicross has become such an integral and important part of the community of Kimberley. We wish to thank our patients for this the trust they continue to place in us and assure them that we are in Kimberley to stay,” concludes Liebenberg.
