New medical team now at the helm of Netcare Vaalpark Hospital’s emergency department

Well-known medical team to expand its footprint in the Vaal region

Tuesday, February 18 2020

Netcare Vaalpark Hospital has announced that the well-established practice of Drs Mabude and Bester Incorporated, has taken over the management of the hospital’s emergency department as from 31 January 2020.

Nellie Koen, general manager of the hospital, says this is an important new development for the level 3 accredited trauma centre, which is at present the only private emergency department in the area to be accredited by the Trauma Society of South Africa (TSSA).

“The emergency department at the hospital has been providing vital 24-hour medical emergency services to the community since the hospital first opened in the late 1980s. Sasolburg is surrounded by industry and the emergency department therefore plays a valuable supporting role to businesses in the area.,” notes Koen.

“We are most fortunate to have secured the services of Drs MB Inc which is owned by Dr Sisanda Mabude and Dr Marius Bester, both of whom are well known and highly regarded in the community.”

Dr Sisanda Mabude has over 18 years’ experience as a medical practitioner within both the public and private sectors and holds postgraduate diplomas in occupational health and HIV management. Her experience in the emergency medicine sector spans over a decade. She is the occupational health practitioner at a leading steel company where she oversees the medical surveillance of all employees and is responsible for the management of injuries on duty, absenteeism as well as incapacity and disability, all of which are of special interest to her. She is currently registered for a Masters in Bioethics and Health Law.

Former Golden Lions U19 and U21 rugby player, Dr Marius Bester, has more than 12 years’ experience in trauma management and also holds a Masters in Sports Medicine. He has been invited to do a PhD in Emergency Medicine, researching sudden cardiac death in athletes.

Dr Bester is World Rugby and SA Rugby certified to serve as a match day doctor and has served in this capacity at numerous SA Rugby affiliated youth weeks. He also served as chief match day doctor for the Springboks during the South Africa vs. England 2018 series, and on occasion serves as team doctor for the Golden Lions Currie Cup, Super15 and U21 teams. He has a keen interest in sports related concussion and is looking forward to broadening his knowledge in this field.

“The practice has vast experience in emergency medicine and an impeccable track record. Every member of our diverse medical team, which consists of more than 50 doctors, is certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support [ATLS], Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support [ACLS] and Paediatric Advanced Life Support [PALS]. In addition both Dr Mabude and I are Basic Life Support Instructors and are able to assist with the training of medical and para-medical personnel,” notes Dr Bester.

“The Netcare Vaalpark Hospital emergency department can therefore draw on the skills and experience of a team of highly experienced emergency medical practitioners as well as the expertise of well-established occupational health and sports medicine practitioners at any given time,” he added.

Mande Toubkin, general manager emergency, trauma and transplant at Netcare, thanked Dr Odwa Gulwa and Dr Mancha Maphosa for managing the emergency department since 2017.

“Their presence will be missed at the hospital and we wish them the very best in their future endeavours. We look forward to seeing Netcare Vaalpark Hospital’s emergency department continue its growth trajectory under the aegis of Dr Mabude and Dr Bester,” concluded Toubkin.
