State of the art emergency department unveiled in Rustenburg

Large new emergency department set to save time and lives

Thursday, November 30 2023

In a significant milestone for the Rustenburg community, the newly refurbished emergency department at Netcare Ferncrest Hospital was officially opened earlier this month, marking a pivotal moment for local healthcare.

The extensive upgrade, which took six months to complete, has transformed the emergency department into a state of the art facility, now almost double the size of its predecessor.

"The upgraded emergency department is a testament to our commitment to providing the best and safest healthcare to the communities of Rustenburg and surrounding areas," says hospital general manager Jabulani Ndlovu, expressing his enthusiasm for the completed project while noting its timely completion just ahead of the festive season.

Proudly unveiling the transformed face of emergency care in Rustenburg are Dr Hendrick Lucky Mapefane, chairperson of Netcare Ferncrest Hospital's Physicians Advisory Board; and Dr Susan van Niekerk, director of the hospital's emergency department and managing partner of van Niekerk Inc, the medical practice responsible for managing the emergency department at the hospital.

The modern facility includes a triage bay, a waiting area, three consulting rooms, an ensuite high risk consulting room, a three-bed resuscitation area and four observation rooms.

Netcare Ferncrest Hospital, already recognised as a Trauma Society of South Africa accredited level 3 trauma centre, adheres to stringent standards to ensure prompt and effective emergency medical services.

Emphasising the hospital's dedication to achieving international healthcare standards, Mande Toubkin, general manager of emergency, trauma, transplant and CSI at Netcare, noted that numerous studies have indicated timely access to the right trauma care significantly improves patient outcomes.

“Our accreditation and adherence to TSSA criteria affirm that Netcare Ferncrest Hospital is well-equipped with qualified personnel and resources to provide swift assessment, resuscitation and stabilisation of patients," she explained.

The newly upgraded emergency department has a dedicated drop-off zone for ambulances, ensuring quick access to emergency medical services and streamlining the arrival of patients needing urgent care. Additionally, the facility features a system for the prompt availability of general surgeons, standardised treatment protocols for quality care, and an established early transfer system for patients requiring a higher level of emergency care.

Toubkin also highlighted the hospital's commitment to ongoing reporting of treatment outcomes, which provides an indication that the high standards demanded of TSSA accredited facilities are in place for the optimisation of patient care.

"We are thrilled to unveil this beautiful new emergency department, equipped with the latest technology for the benefit of our patients. Our doctors and nurses appreciate the spacious design, which enhances the efficiency of care delivery. The private and comfortable consulting rooms make our patients feel safe and well cared for,” Ndlovu remarked.

Notably, the upgraded emergency department signifies a milestone for the Rustenburg community, eliminating the need for residents to travel outside the province for specialised private medical services.

"These enhancements mark a significant step forward in making high-quality emergency services more accessible to our community, effectively reducing both response times and, more importantly, safeguarding lives – a commitment which is at the heart of this development," concluded Ndlovu.
