First private hospital in KZN accredited by the Trauma Society of South Africa

Netcare Kingsway Hospital meets stringent quality accreditation standards

Tuesday, December 15 2015

Netcare Kingsway Hospital has been recognised for the outstanding work of its emergency department by being the first private hospital in KwaZulu-Natal to be accredited by the Trauma Society of South Africa (TSSA), as a level 3 trauma unit.

“This distinction is all the more rewarding because of the high standards upheld by the TSSA. It is truly a feather in our cap that this facility has achieved the standards and other rigorous requirements of the TSSA to reach this milestone,” general manager of Netcare Kingsway Hospital, Annatjie Demetriou, says.

The hospital’s emergency unit manager, Sharlon Dromgool, adds: “This accreditation serves as recognition of our ongoing efforts to ensure that all trauma patients receive quality care and, ultimately, the best possible outcomes.”

The TSSA aims to prevent and mitigate trauma due to all forms of mechanical injury, through the propagation of quality treatment and appropriate surgical intervention. The TSSA strives to fulfill the aims of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration on Emergency Care, with regard to services provided to the injured in South Africa. It also provides the standards for accreditation of trauma units in South Africa, in accordance with nationally agreed criteria.

Regional director of Netcare’s Coastal Region, Craig Murphy, explains that the accreditation is valid for the next three years. “As a part of the hospital’s accreditation process, it must meet a number of stringent quality service criteria, and evaluation of compliance to the standards will be undertaken on an annual basis.”

Netcare Kingsway Hospital’s accreditation with the TSSA forms part of Netcare’s countrywide project to implement quality accreditation standards at its emergency departments, which will enable Netcare to benchmark itself against the standards set by the TSSA in South Africa.
