Freedom of the hospital for first-born baby

New maternity unit celebrates first birth

Wednesday, October 21 2015

Baby Joelle Nolwazi Kanyindanot only became the firstborn to overjoyed parents Pearl Khothatso Moeketsi and Yannick Kanyinda, she is also the new 100-bed Netcare Pinehaven Hospital's 'firstborn'. Staff and management at the hospital in Pinehaven were so thrilled with the new arrival that they marked the occasion by conferring the 'freedom of the hospital' on Joelle.

Baby Joelle was born a healthy 3.03 kg and 49cm in length at 5.47am on Friday, 16 October. Her mother, Pearl, said she received excellent care from obstetrician Dr Miriam Machetela, midwife Sr Susan Moeketsi, nurse Chantal Gabriels and other staff involved in the delivery and care of her tiny bundle of joy.

Nursing services manager at Netcare Pinehaven Hospital, Constance Majeke, says Joelle's birth is a historic occasion for the new facility, as one of the hospital's focus areas is the care of mothers, babies and children.
Baby Joelle will receive free vaccinations at Netcare Pinehaven Hospital's Stork's Nest mother and baby wellness clinic for the first five years of her life, and a special certificate and booklet with photographs to mark the special occasion will be presented to her parents. A plaque commemorating the event will occupy pride of place in the hospital's mother and child unit.

According to Majeke, Netcare Pinehaven Hospital's brand new 15-bed maternity unit, or mother and child unit as it has been named, is equipped to international standards. There is a choice between private and semi-private en-suite accommodation to suit expectant mothers' individual needs.

The unit also has a nursery, two first-stage delivery rooms, two delivery rooms and a dedicated caesarean theatre to ensure fast and effective emergency intervention if needed. The nursery unit has a central telescopic pillar that has oxygen, suction and electrical points giving the maternity staff easy access to the equipment in the unit. There is also an expressing corner for mothers and an intensive care crib which can accommodate the baby should the emergency care be required.

A five-bed neonatal ICU incorporating state-of-the-art medical technology is situated adjacent to the mother and child unit to enable world-class care for premature babies and other babies requiring specialised treatment.

A Netcare Stork's Nest mother and baby wellness clinic within the hospital provides a range of value-adding antenatal and postnatal services, such as antenatal classes, baby vaccinations, milestone monitoring and baby first aid classes to complement the maternity and neonatal services. The clinic is open Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 4.30pm.

Majeke says that Netcare Pinehaven Hospital offers a range of health services including specialised gynaecology; ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery; general surgery and internal medicine, but is likely to become particularly well known in the community for the care and treatment it provides to mothers, babies and children as well as for its specialised orthopaedics.

"The birth of Joelle marks the beginning of a great new journey for the experienced gynaecologists, maternity staff and paediatricians at the hospital, and we are looking forward to being of service to many more expectant mothers.

We are honoured that Joelle's parents chose our facility and wish them and Joelle a wonderful future."
