The city of Pietermaritzburg has lost a talented healthcare professional with the recent, unexpected passing of the talented and respected Dr Ivana Nosenzo.

Commenting on the tragic news Salome Liebenberg, general manager operations of Netcare Medicross, said that family and loved ones of Dr Ivana, her colleagues and patients alike have been deeply impacted by her untimely passing.

“On behalf of Netcare Medicross, I wish to express our profound sadness and condolences to her partner Ralph, her family and many close friends. The 62-year old Dr Ivana has been practising at Netcare Medicross Hayfields for close on two decades, and will always be remembered with deep affection by all who had the privilege to know her and work with her.

“She was talented and totally devoted to her subject and her patients. In the close on 20 years that she practised at Medicross Hayfields she left an indelible mark on her patients and the community that she served. We are thankful to her for the rich professional legacy that she has left behind and for allowing us to be part of her life.”

Dr Ivana completed her undergraduate MBChB degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and thereafter worked as a registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology for four years. She later opted to change specialities to general practice and completed her training in the United Kingdom where she worked for several years. On her return to South Africa she practised as a general practitioner in various practices in KwaZulu-Natal until settling at Hayfields Medicross where she built up a highly successful practice.

In a special tribute from her colleagues Dr Ivana was described as an exceptional general practitioner who went beyond the call of duty for her patients, often to the detriment of herself. “A good doctor and an excellent listener who was known to be compassionate, dedicated and loyal, Dr Ivana had a considerable impact on all of us and most importantly on her patients. She had a wide knowledge of medicine with an extensive library and references and her advice was often sought by her colleagues. Her talents went far beyond medicine. She enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidery, sewing, knitting and was an avid gardener.”

“She was respected and loved by patients, staff and colleagues and had a strong sense of justice as well as being supportive of women’s rights in the workplace.

“Dr Ivana you are dearly missed by your colleagues and patients. We will treasure the fond memories we have of you and will remember your smile and compassionate nature. Gone too soon – may your beautiful soul rest in peace,” concluded Liebenberg.
