Nursing is personal; it has equipped me for life

Celebrating South Africa’s nursing professionals on International Nurses Day

Monday, May 12 2025

In some of life’s most poignant moments, nurses are the reassuring presence at the bedside or working behind the scenes, offering solace, expertise, and support to care for patients in various skilled roles. But what fuels these healthcare heroes, day after day, to pour their hearts into a profession that demands so much? This International Nurses Day, we explore the inspiration that drives them to make each day’s work personal and significant.

“Since I was a child, I was inspired to become an intensive care nurse, so it is deeply personal to me. My father passed away when I was young, and I experienced first-hand the empathy and professionalism the nurses displayed during an extremely difficult time for us,” says Mary Ann Nabbie, Netcare’s group director of nursing.

“Nursing is about reaching out to the next person with your skills and your heart, empathising and comforting another human being. This International Nurses Day, we celebrate the contribution of nurses as the backbone of healthcare.”

“This is a profession that provides enormous scope to learn and develop. Nursing is vast and dynamic, and the roles and specialisations are varied, including theatre, trauma and emergency, paediatric or oncology nursing, to mention just a few. It’s more than a career, nursing has equipped me for life,” Nabbie says.

After specialising in intensive care nursing, Nabbie gained international experience before returning to South Africa in senior leadership nursing roles within hospitals and at a regional level within Netcare before taking up her current role as group director of nursing.

“I found my space within the nursing profession, and my advice to the next generation considering a career in healthcare is that if you love people, you can find your niche in nursing. We hold a place of trust in our communities that is earned through embedding ourselves in the values of nursing.

“Being a nurse allows you to find your specific calling, and it will find you as your interest and knowledge develops in your chosen field. If you step up in the role, nursing will allow you to do great things,” Nabbie says.

Nabbie thanked all nurses within the Netcare Group, including Netcare hospitals, Netcare Medicross, and Netcare Akeso, for caring for patients and families in a thousand different ways that are often unseen but no less crucial for the individuals who rely on them.

“On behalf of the Netcare Group, we thank everyone in the nursing profession whose kindness, compassion and valuable skills provide care and comfort from the heart to care for strangers and uphold their dignity at times of greatest need and vulnerability, as we would for members of our own family.”
