Our emergency departments and trauma centres

Our emergency departments are spread across seven provinces in South Africa. On average, over 600 000 patients receive care at our emergency departments every year.

Clinical care at our emergency departments is provided by independent emergency practices.

The doctors are responsible for initial diagnosis, facilitating diagnostic investigation, and clinical treatments of patients. They also determine whether a patient should be admitted for in-hospital specialised care or can be discharged following emergency care.

“TSSA accreditation of trauma centres supports ongoing improvement in both the processes of care and patient outcomes.”

What does TSSA trauma centre accreditation mean to you as a patient?

  • The high TSSA standards are your assurance that you will receive quality care at our accredited facilities.
  • Knowing the accreditation levels of the individual Netcare hospitals means that emergency medical service providers can take patients to the nearest, most appropriate trauma centre for their specific emergency needs.
  • Patients who require more specialised treatment than a facility can provide, will be transferred to one where such care is available. This will be done after they have been stabilised.

How we determine priorities for emergency treatment

Netcare uses the South African Triage Scale to assess the severity of the condition of each patient seeking assistance at our emergency departments. Assessing the severity of each patient's condition enables us to assign treatment priorities based on the urgency of their condition.
