Our emergency departments are spread across seven provinces in South Africa. On average, over 600 000 patients receive care at our emergency departments every year. Clinical care at our emergency departments is provided by independent emergency practices. The doctors are responsible for initial diagnosis, facilitating diagnostic investigation, and clinical treatments of patients. They also determine whether a patient should be admitted for in-hospital specialised care or can be discharged following emergency care.
Four of our facilities – Netcare Milpark and Netcare Alberton hospitals in Gauteng, Netcare St Anne’s Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, and Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in the Western Cape – are the only level 1 TSSA accredited private sector facilities in South Africa.
Level 1
Provides total care for every aspect of injury, from prevention to rehabilitation. Has a helipad for receiving airlifted trauma patients.
Provides initial definitive trauma care regardless of the severity of injury. Critically injured patients with complex injuries may be transferred to a Level 1 trauma centre after stabilisation.
Serves communities who do not have access to a Level 1 or Level 2 trauma centre. Provides prompt assessment, resuscitation, basic emergency operations and stabilisation. If required, a patient will be transferred to a Level 1 or Level 2 trauma centre to provide the required specialised care.
Provides basic trauma life support prior to the patient being transferred for definitive care. Usually situated in a clinic and may not have a doctor available on site. Netcare has no Level 4 emergency departments.
Netcare uses the South African Triage Scale to assess the severity of the condition of each patient seeking assistance at our emergency departments. Assessing the severity of each patient's condition enables us to assign treatment priorities based on the urgency of their condition.
